Friction is the resistance to motion that occurs

Submission deadline:Monday, 26 May 2025

Submission guidelines

    Types of Friction

    1. Static Friction

      • Acts when an object is at rest and prevents it from moving.
      • It must be overcome to initiate motion.
      • Example: Pushing a heavy box that doesn’t move initially.
    2. Kinetic (Sliding) Friction

      • Occurs when an object is already in motion.
      • Usually less than static friction.
      • Example: Sliding a book across a table.
    3. Rolling Friction

      • Happens when an object rolls over a surface.
      • Much weaker than sliding friction.
      • Example: A rolling ball or bicycle wheels.

Topic categories

  • Factors Affecting Friction
  • Lubrication: Oil or grease can reduce friction.
  • Material Type: Some materials naturally have higher or lower friction.
  • Normal Force: Heavier objects experience more friction.
  • Surface Roughness: Rougher surfaces create more friction.
